Diameter and length gauging of turned parts from silhouette
A stepped shaft arrives at the measuring position on a V-block pallet. A telecentric camera derives diameter and length from its backlit silhouette; the out-of-tolerance pallet is routed to the reject lane.
Diameter and length appear on the display with the measurement record. The out-of-tolerance pallet is rejected by the pusher; the decision appears on the stack light.

Need
Reflections on a polished shaft obscure edge position under front lighting. Pallet-position variation and stepped diameters require each measurement to use the correct pair of edges.
Solution approach
V-blocks hold the shaft horizontally while the opposing backlight produces a dark outer silhouette. A calibrated telecentric view locates the opposing edges of the selected diameter and the shaft ends; illustrative measurements are compared with a tolerance window.
Process steps
- 01
Pallet
The V-block pallet arrives at the gauging position.
- 02
Silhouette
The telecentric camera captures the backlit image.
- 03
Measure
Diameter edges and shaft ends are located.
- 04
Decide
Measurements are evaluated and the nonconforming pallet is rejected.
