Rotational radial-runout and axis gauging of spline shafts
A spline shaft rotates in a driven roller nest. Silhouette edge and axis position are sampled against angle; a radial-displacement chart and peak-to-peak runout measurement are shown together.
Angle-indexed edge position and peak-to-peak runout are recorded. The PLC holds an out-of-tolerance shaft; working reference and separation of tooth effects are defined during measurement-method validation.

Need
Spline teeth produce periodic diameter variation that can resemble wobble. Silhouette movement cannot be interpreted as true runout without linking the support axis, rotation angle and reference region correctly.
Solution approach
A roller nest rotates the shaft; a side telecentric camera samples selected reference-band edges against a backlight. Radial position is computed by angle against a calibrated axis reference. The illustrative chart distinguishes tooth periodicity from axis movement.
Process steps
- 01
Locate
The shaft is placed in two driven roller nests.
- 02
Reference and trigger
Axis reference and initial angle are established.
- 03
Sample
Edge position is sampled by angle while the shaft rotates.
- 04
Geometric analysis
A displacement chart and peak-to-peak runout are calculated.
- 05
Tolerance and PLC
The runout limit determines the PLC pass or hold decision.
