Non-contact gear profile measurement
A spur gear rotates step by step in a fixture between a telecentric camera and parallel backlight. Its silhouette edge is compared with the nominal profile; a broken tooth and profile deviation are shown on the measurement display.
Tooth count, diameter and profile deviation are linked to the measurement record; a tooth departing from the nominal profile is shown on the display and on the part, and an NG signal is produced.

Need
Tooth tips and roots form different edge regions; small axis eccentricity can affect the measured diameter. The profile is evaluated after alignment to the gear centre.
Solution approach
Parallel backlighting turns the gear into a silhouette; a telecentric view supports edge comparison at a consistent scale. Contours acquired in the rotary fixture are aligned to the centre reference. Tooth count, diameters, pitch and local deviation from the nominal profile are calculated separately.
Process steps
- 01
Fixture
The gear is located by its centre in the fixture.
- 02
Acquire
The silhouette is captured under backlighting.
- 03
Index
The fixture rotates in steps and tooth edges are extracted.
- 04
Compare
The measured profile is compared with the nominal contour.
- 05
Decide
Profile deviation and tooth count are evaluated against the limits.
