Length, pitch and end-form gauging of springs
A spring drops from the winding outlet through a chute into a V nest and stops before a backlight on the indexing line. Coil peaks and end form are measured in silhouette; a spring with uneven pitch is diverted into the reject bin by an air nozzle.
Free length, pitch spread and end form are stored in the part result; a spring exceeding the pitch limit is routed to the reject bin by an air jet.

Need
Coils form overlapping edges; if the spring lies at an angle in the nest, pitch and length can appear changed. Dimensions are evaluated relative to the fitted axis.
Solution approach
A V nest stabilizes the spring for a side view; a telecentric camera and backlight form the wire silhouette. Coil peaks are located, an axis line is fitted and neighbouring peak distances are measured. Free length and closed end form are checked in the same image.
Process steps
- 01
Feed
The spring drops through the chute into the V nest.
- 02
Acquire
The nest stops before the backlight and a silhouette is captured.
- 03
Peaks
Coil peaks and the spring axis are located.
- 04
Measure
Length, pitch and end form are evaluated.
- 05
Reject
A non-conforming spring is diverted by an air nozzle.
