Wear measurement on cutting-tool edges
The tool magazine brings the cutting edge to the inspection nest; a side camera images it under oblique lighting. The extracted contour is compared with a reference and shape loss is linked to a tool-change decision.
Edge loss and contour deviation are shown on the display; the stack light changes for an NG tool and a tool-change request is sent to the control system.

Need
Reflections from the bright cutting edge can obscure wear. Separating a chipped tip from normal edge geometry requires a consistent view and a reference contour.
Solution approach
The magazine indexes the tool to its inspection position. A side camera sees the tip face-on; oblique bar lighting emphasizes edge shape changes. The detected edge is aligned with a blue nominal contour and local loss distance is measured.
Process steps
- 01
Index
The magazine rotates the next tool into the inspection nest.
- 02
Acquire
The side camera and oblique light image the edge.
- 03
Contour
The cutting edge is matched with the reference contour.
- 04
Measure
Local shape loss is measured.
- 05
Decide
Edge loss is checked against the limit and a replacement request is produced.
